EVENTUAL GRAVITATION FROM HINDUISM TO BUDDHISM!
DOES OUR EXPERIENCE TESTIFY 'GOD'?
Recently completed reading of latest book ofArun Shourie,titled 'Does he know mothers heart?How sufferings refutes religions ?'Based on his personal agony and trauma,having his only son Adit,crippled from childhood due to Cerebral Palsy and during later years,his wife Anita,diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and despite his association with Hindutav Sanghparivar [BJP],he has asked a question [which most people ask under trying circumstances]-"why me-why my child and why my wife". Accordingly larger part of the book is devoted to his quest for finding a reason,a justification for his child's plight and his wife's tears. In his own scholarly style,he has questioned the doctrine of Karma and tried to find answer from various religions ie the Bible,the Gita,the Quran and other religious philosophies. He has questioned Mhatma Gandhi's emphasis on submitting to God's will and Ramakrishna Paramhanas and Raman Mharishi's explanation of suffering. With logical interpretations of various religious texts,author exposes the hollowness of existing theories and ideas,that seek to give a divine justification for suffering.He has come to the conclusion,"the explanations that scriptures proffer,for the occurrence of pain and suffering,do not stand up to slightest examination."At the same time,he has tried to shatter illusions and myths surrounding the causes of suffering. He has raised another vital and fundamental question:why should the punishment described in various religious
texts,either in this life or here after be so horrendously cruel? How can God,hailed as compassionate and all forgiving,sanction death and worse for those who do not believe in him or worship a rival ? In a devastating dissection of the scriptures-laced with accounts of suffering and pain that he has seen at first hand,Arun Shourie has discussed in detail the fundamental conundrum,"at the moment of creation, there had been no previous lives.Hence how did differences in natural endowments and circumstances at this point arise?...How did God ordain unequal capacities and predispositions at the moment of creation,for at that moment there were no prior good or bad deeds that had been committed by individuals [page 275,280]."Why has God while decreeing his order,promised for such enormous suffering to be visited upon the innocent;should my son believe that only calamity that befalls me is also because of my sin committed?While drawing courage from Buddhist texts,which underline the need to face reality of suffering,he has somewhat candidly quoted a Persian couplet in which the poet asks :-
I do evil and you punish me with evil;
What is the difference you and me ?
Tailpiece :-While dissecting "religiosity and rituals",he has suggested certain rationalistic exercises [page 372-385],which are worth to be adopted in our day to day practice and perception,in order to remove the props one by one,about God,inerrant scriptures,the authority of intermediaries,God men and other intercessors.
