IN RESPONSE TO KOREEN KRUGER AND SOME OTHER FRIENDS;
MORE ABOUT ROBERT GREEN INGERSOL [1833-1899].
To describe and define agnosticism of Ingersol as some sort of ideological confusion is too much.It will be beyond any logic as well as comprehension to analyze his contribution in the light of present day practice and perception of atheism and free thinking.He was a relentless champion of supremacy
of reason and left an indelible impression on the minds of people by exploding the myth of gods and miracles.Let us not forget that Ingersol lived in a Christian America.Accordingly his first target of attack as on superstition necessarily was Bible.
Ingersol,an outstanding American rationalist,has explained his mission in the following statement :-
"somebody ought to tell the truth about the Bible.The preachers dare not,because they would be driven from their pulpits.Professors in colleges dare not,because they would loose their salaries.Politicians dare not,they would be defeated. Editors dare not,they would loose their subscribers. Merchants dare not,they might loose their customers.Men of fashion dare not,fearing they might loose caste.Even clerics dare not,because they might be discharged.And so,i thought i would do it myself [about Bible]."[As quoted by Professor A Karunandan].
Damning gods and damning religion have been never easy tasks. Extending such rational criticism to one's own religion and god would render that rationalist a traitor,a heretic and atheist.It required an extreme amount of courage of conviction ,clarity in conception and extra ordinary self sacrificing commitment to take up the unusual and non populist mission of questioning religious beliefs,religious institutions,religious scriptures,religious myths and religious deities.
